NHS Wales Informatics Service – are the leading health information and techniology employer in Wales and are delivering information services online for all health services. We supply over 70 key services to hospitals, GPs and Pharmacists including web, systems development and information dashboards.

NHS Wales are:

• Leading on  the new integrated digital information services required for improved quality and outcome of care – patients in Wales can book appointments and order repeat prescriptions online
• Supplying over 70 services to the NHS in Wales, including the technology infrastructure
• Analysing NHS data and making it available in easy to use formats to support planning and decisions – for example dashboards
• Setting the direction for robust and integrated primary and community care systems
• Setting the standards for health informatics professional development

How NHS Wales use IT:

GPs can make electronic referrals – nearly 100,000 a year are now sent electronically to hospitals

Doctors in hospitals can manage their patient lists, request tests and view results electronically through a national system developed by NWIS

Out of hours health professionals can access a summary of the GP record electronically

In partnership with NHS Wales shared services - pharmacists can scan prescriptions into their IT system

Radiologists can send x-rays and scans electronically between hospitals

Clinicians can use telehealth – where specialists in a hospital in the West can link with specialists in the East to look at a patient’s treatment using high definition video conferencing

Through national and local IT service desks – staff can get help with IT systems through a central portal

In partnership with Swansea University we have a state of the art ehealth laboratory for testing, training and development.

Health informatics professional development increases the skills of specialist staff

All NHS Wales staff are given the opportunity to increase skills in IT through professional development
